Name: Andrea Rota
Birth: c.1553 in Bologna
Death: 1597-06 in Bologna
Little to nothing is known of Rota's early life. In 1583 he was appointed as maestro di cappell at S Petronio and spent the remainder of his life there. He published two books of motets, a book of masses, and three books of madrigal (2 for 5 voices in 1579 and 1589, and one for four voices in 1592). He contributed a number of madrigals to collections associated with the d'Este court in Ferrara, and his second libro of madrigali (dedicated to Alfonso II d'Este) show considerable influence of the Ferrarese style.
In that second book, Tasso is the most represented poet, followed by Angelo Grillo (detto Livio Cellano) and Guarini.
