Qui cantò Meliseo, qui proprio assisimi, quand'ei scrisse in quel faggio: «vidi, io misero, vidi Filli morire, e non uccisimi.» O pietà grande! E quali Dii permisero a Meliseo venir fatto tant'aspero? perché di vita pria non lo divisero? Questa pianta vorrei che tu mostrassimi, per poter a mia posta in quella piangere; forse a dir le mie pene oggi incitassimi! Mille ne son, che qui vedere e tangere a tua posta potrai; cerca in quel nespilo; ma destro nel toccar, guarda nol frangere. |
Barcinio: Here Meliseo sang, here I stationed myself when he carved into that beech: «I saw, O wretched me, I saw Phyllis die, and did not slay myself.» Summonzio: O great pity! And which Gods permitted Meliseo to come to such bitterness? Why did they not part him from his life sooner?
